October 7, 2020

Important note from your hosts: Due to the preventative protocols regarding the coronavirus, our events have moved online and have been enhanced with three separate breakout sessions. By registering, for this event, you get access to one main event, plus two Q&A Audience sessions.  All registrants will get tickets/links to the virtual conferences.

Invent Health #inventhealth salons are quarterly "intimate" events hosted by Vator, HP and UCSF Health Hub, where the audience (100-200) and select speakers interact around one topic. Topics have included "Mental Health", "Reinventing the doctor's role", "Future of clinics", "Lifestyle", etc and are discussed by influencers from various backgrounds to provide a 360-degree perspective. The goal is to create an environment conducive to creating connections amongst guests and to have a solid discussion and/or debate around one area of healthcare that's ripe for innovation.

The topic this quarter is: “Healthcare in Politics.” With the November elections around the corner amid an unprecedented year of disruption due to the COVID pandemic, we will be taking a deep dive into policies that affect our healthcare infrastructure. This year, HHS declared on January 31, 2020 a public health emergency, allowing states and local governments to seek COVID-related federal assistance. On March 17, CMS announced waiving telehealth regulations temporarily which was followed by more regulatory relief in April, including the ability to easily hire healthcare workers across states and expand at-home treatments.  Since COVID has disproportionately impacted underserved communities, in June, HHS announced $15 billion in relief payments for Medicaid and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program). Also to help low-income communities, in 2017, opportunity zones were created to finance projects in such neighborhoods, as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. As of June 1, 2020, some $47 billion in anticipated investment has been earmarked for affordable housing and zone community projects. Despite fatality rates for COVID seemingly lower than the flu, there’s still more to be done as the virus spreads. Moreover, the discussion will also revolve around healthcare policy in general as both Trump and the presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, largely believe in a public-private partnership. The question is how much is run by the government and how much by the private sector. Here’s a review of Biden’s proposals. Here’s a review of Trump’s

Main Event

October 7, 2020 12pm-4:30pm PT

12:00pm-12:15pm - Welcome remarks

12:15pm-12:35pm - Keynote by Congressman Ami Bera

12:35pm-1:35pm - Government Health Initiatives: The CDC and the private sector were not prepared for the broad testing needed. What can policymakers and innovators do together to create a more rapid response protocol to a pandemic? COVID has exposed the gap in coverage with lower-income communities at a disadvantage. Are we leveraging the initiatives already in place to support underserved communities (healthcare, education, opportunity)?

2:20pm-3:20pm - Open up/Shut down: Despite COVID fatality rates declining, the higher caseloads remain a concern. What's the risk-reward health scenarios between reopening vs staying shut, especially for schools? Are the negative effects of job loss, financial stress, mental health deterioration in adults and kids far greater than the secondary effects of respiratory, cardiac and kidney problems?

Moderator: Archana Dubey (Global Medical Director, HP), Bambi Francisco Roizen (Founder & CEO, Vator) Speakers: Duncan Davidson (Partner, Bullpen Capital), Leslie Krigstein (Vice President, Government Affairs, Livongo), Phil Kerpen (President, American Commitment), Emily Barson (Executive Director, United States of Care)

3:20pm-4:20pm - Data, data, data: COVID data should be available to ensure scientists, innovators, policymakers are all leveraging the same data to make collective progress. Is the government handling data correctly? What new data has telehealth created? What new tests are helping collect data faster? What new predictive analytics, preventative and precision technologies are we leveraging to better track who's getting exposed and who's spreading the virus?
